Celebrating LGBT+ Rights During LGBT+ History Month 2025 🌈

LGBT+ History Month 2025 is a month in which people across the UK honour the activists, trailblazers, and communities who have fought tirelessly for equality, visibility, and change.

From historic moments of resistance, like the Stonewall Riots, to pivotal milestones in UK activism, the journey toward LGBT+ rights has been paved with courage, resilience, and unwavering determination.

At Be What You See, we are honouring LGBT+ History Month by thinking through our work in LGBTQIA+ inclusion.

Four Crucial Moments That Shape LGBT+ Rights Today

Here are just a few key moments of activism and social change that have shaped the landscape of LGBT+ rights and continue to inspire us all:

✨ The partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in England and Wales (1967): A landmark moment, though full equality remained a long way off.

Repeal of Section 28 (2003): A victory against discriminatory legislation that silenced and stigmatised LGBT+ education in schools.

The Equality Act (2010): A significant piece of legislation offering protection against discrimination, including for transgender people under the protected characteristic of 'gender reassignment'.

Legalisation of same-sex marriage (2014): A momentous occasion, finally recognising and celebrating love without limits.

The role of history in LGBT+ History Month and its future

History reminds us of the progress made, but also of the ongoing struggles for full equality and acceptance. This LGBT+ History Month, we not only celebrate these achievements but also acknowledge the battles still being fought.

We recognise the vital importance of intersectionality within the LGBT+ community, understanding that experiences are shaped by multiple identities and that different groups face unique challenges. The fight for trans rights, for example, continues to be a crucial part of the broader LGBT+ movement.

Reaching out to and supporting LGBT+ youth

We must also remember the importance of supporting LGBT+ youth, who often face disproportionate levels of bullying and discrimination. Let’s use this month to celebrate progress, amplify diverse voices within the community, and commit to creating truly inclusive spaces for everyone, all year round.

We encourage you to delve deeper into the rich tapestry of LGBT+ history, explore the stories of those who have paved the way, and support organisations working tirelessly towards a more equitable and accepting future for all.
